Oklahoma is tradition bound and was one of the last teams in the Big 12 to introduce an alternate football uniform when it finally did so in 2014.

This week, the team announced that it would unveil a new alternate uniform this season that harkens back to the glory years of the Bud Wilkinson Sooner teams. The new uniform pays homage to the period between 1946 and 1956, a time when Oklahoma was dominated the college football scene, capturing three national championships.

"OU's 2024 alternate ensemble features crimson jerseys with white numerals, white tri-stripes on the shoulder sleeves and SEC and Jordan Brand patches," according to a press release issued on Thursday by the Oklahoma athletic department.

The new alternate uniform also included crimson striping down the side of white pants and a red stripe down the middle of a logo-free white helmet.

Oklahoma will debut the new throwback uniform on Sept. 7, when the Sooners host Big 12 foe Houston at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Along with the announcement about the new alternate uniform, the team also revealed that it is retiring the "Rough Riders/Bring the Wood" alternate uniforms featuring a unique wood-grained design that were first worn in the 2014 season. The anthracite-colored "Unity" uniform, however, introduced in 2022, will remain part of Oklahoma's alternate uniform ensemble.

Wilkinson coached the Oklahoma football team from 1946 to 1963 and is the third winningest coach in program history based on total wins (145) behind Bob Stoops (190) and Barry Switzer (157).
