QB Jackson Arnold not a one-man band; he's surrounded by a full orchestra of complementary pieces
By Chip Rouse
Jackson Arnold is the new face of Oklahoma football, but he is not a one-man band. The former five-star recruit has been handed the keys to the car for the 2024 season, and the expectations are high that he will become the next star quarterback on a growing list of high-quality Sooner signal callers.
A quarterback's success, however, is largely dependent on the supporting cast and the offensive weapons he has around him. While there are some questions about the offensive line, there is little question that Arnold has a bevy of offensive weapons at his disposal, a supporting cast that CBS Sports college football analyst Clint Brewster rates as one the the best in college football entering the 2024 season.
Brewster posted a ranking of the top dozen FBS teams that have done the best job heading into the 2024 season of setting up their quarterback with a supporting cast built for success. Oklahoma is No. 10 on the list. And perhaps not surprising by now, the SEC is heavily represented with five other teams besides the Sooners included in the ranking. No. 3 LSU, No. 5 Ole Miss, No. 6 Texas, No. 8 Georgia and No. 9 Missouri also made the list.
As luck would have it, Oklahoma will play all of those teams, with the exception of Georgia, in the 2024 season and all away from Norman.
Brewster had this to say about the Oklahoma supporting cast:
"The Sooners easily have one of the top receiver rooms with newcomer Deion Burks from Purdue and returning pass catchers Nic Anderson, Andrel Anthony and Jalil Farooq to name a few. There's also speed merchant Brenan Thompson, who could have a breakout season. At running back there's Gavin Sawchuk and Jovantae Barnes, but don't forget about incoming blue-chipper Taylor Tatum. On the offensive line, Oklahoma has some holes to fill (all five spots actually) but picked up what could be the best center in the country with Branson Hickman in the portal."
