Oklahoma punter Luke Elzinga was named to the Ray's 8 list for Week 2 of the college football season. Ray's 8, which is affiliated with the Ray Guy Award, which annually honors the most outstanding punter in college football, recognizes the top eight punters each week of the season.

Elzinga, who transferred to Oklahoma from Central Michigan prior to the 2023 season, is averaging 43.5 yards per punt this season and has placed six of his 12 punt attempts inside the opponent's 20-yard line, which is tops in the SEC.

Now in his fifth year of college football, Elzinga punted a season-high eight times in Oklahoma's 16-12 win over Houston last weekend. He averaged 44.0 yards per punt, with a long of 54 yards, and placed five of his kicks inside the 20-yard line.

In early August, Elzinga was named the the Ray Guy Award watch list for the 2024 season.

Elzinga took over the punting responsibility from Josh Plaster, himself a transfer from Arizona State, midway through the 2023 season and ended the season with an average of 45.1 yards per punt and 51.5 percent of his punts downed inside the 20-yard line, one of the highest percentages in the country.

Last season, as a member of the Big 12, Elzinga averaged 51.6 yards on five punts in a game with Central Florida (UCF). That average was the sixth best in OU football history in a single game.

No Oklahoma Sooner player has ever won the Ray Guy Award, created in 2000 and named after the former Southern Mississippi All-American and NFL All-Pro with the Oakland Raiders.
