Former Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has had plenty of ups and downs in his six-year NFL career, but Sunday at historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay was one of his best as a pro.
Mayfield completed 22 of 28 passes for 381 yards and four touchdowns in leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 34-20 victory over the Green Bay Packers. The Buccaneers were able to even their season record to 7-7 and remain in the hunt for a postseason playoff berth.
After bouncing between two teams last season, the former Sooner quarterback, considered by many to be the best player to ever play the position at Oklahoma, appears to have found a new permanent home on the west coast of Florida. Mayfield began his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns. He played four seasons as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft before being traded to Carolina in 2022 and later that same season to the Los Angeles Rams.
Mayfield played four seasons in Cleveland after being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Carolina Panthers following the 2021 season. Midway through the 2022 season, the former Sooner was traded again, this time to the Los Angles Rams, with whom he finished out the season.
"He's meant everything," Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles said after Sunday's win, speaking about Mayfield's addition to the Bucs' roster this season. "From a mental standpoint to a quarterback standpoint, making plays. From a toughness standpoint. From a leadership standpoint. He's done everything."
For the Green Bay game, Mayfield posted a perfect quarterback passer rating of 158.3 at Lambeau Field, the highest rating ever recorded by a visiting quarterback at the historic NFl venue. He joins former Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rogers as only the second NFL player to record a perfect passer rating at Lambeau. Rogers did so in a 2019 game against the Oakland Raiders.
Mayfield is the third player in NFL history to throw for at least 375 yards, four touchdowns and post a passer rating of 158.3 in a road game.
This was Mayfield's third visit to Lambeau Field. He was there in 2021 as a member of the Browns and again in 2022 with the Los Angeles Rams. He was 0-2 at Lambeau before Sunday. In his previous two visits combined, the former OU star completed jus 60 percent of his passes. On Sunday in the win over the Packers, Mayfield completed 79 percent of his pass attempts, and his 381 passing yards were just 16 shy of his all-time NFL best (397 yards against the Houston Texans in 2018.
"Third time's a charm, that's for sure," Mayfield said in his postgame interview session.
