Portal losses, one year later: How former Sooners performed on new teams

Did players make the right choice leaving OU?

As has become a December tradition, the transfer portal opened on Monday, and just like the Christmas season, it's full of giving and taking.

Just like every program, Oklahoma loses and gains talent from the transfer portal. Obviously it's easy to keep up with the ones who come to Norman, but what about the talent we got familiar with and went elsewhere?

Here's a look at some of the notable players the Sooners lost last year through the transfer portal and how they peformed on their new teams, whether good or bad.

Dillon Gabriel, QB, Oregon

Dillon Gabriel was the most notable loss last year, but OU fans weren't necessarily depressed about his departure as they looked forward to the beginning of the Jackson Arnold era in the SEC.

A year later, Arnold is now in the transfer portal and Gabriel is a Heisman finalist. Gabriel has completed a career-high 73.2% of his passes for 3,558 yards and 28 TDs. He's also rushed for seven scores.

Gabriel led the Ducks to a Big Ten title in their first year in the conference and has them as the No. 1 team in the College Football Playoff.

This final move could not have worked out any better for Gabriel, who is at his third school.

Hollywood Smothers, RB, NC State

Hollywood Smothers spent only his freshman year in Norman before heading to NC State, where he emerged as the Wolfpack's second-leading rusher as a redshirt freshman.

Smothers rushed for 464 yards and a team-high six TDs while averaging 5.8 yards a carry.

This move worked out for both the Sooners and Smothers. OU had a crowded backfield that included two freshmen. Although a solid talent, Smothers most likely wouldn't have gotten much opportunity this season at OU. He's also already announced his plans to return to NC State next season so he's the future of the program's backfield.

Tawee Walker, RB, Wisconsin

Another causality of a crowded running back room, but the Sooners still probably could have used Tawee Walker, even if it meant redshirting Taylor Tatum and Xavier Robinson.

It all worked out for Walker, though. He was the Badgers' No. 1 running back with 190 carries, 864 yards and 10 TDs. For comparison, Jovantae Barnes led OU running backs with 122 attempts this season.

Walker even put together one of the best rushing performances of the season against Rutgers, running for 198 yards and three TDs.

General Booty, QB, UL Monroe

General Booty's time in college has somewhat resembled his name.

Booty is back in transfer portal after leaving OU just last year. After transferring, he was named QB1 for UL Monroe, but then lost the starting job by the end of September. Now he's headed somewhere else for his final year.

Even with a QB shuffle in Norman, Booty still wouldn't have seen the field for OU this season, so the move best for both parties.

Shane Whitter, LB, North Texas

Shane Whitter was primarily used on special teams at OU but became a contributor on North Texas' defense this season. Whitter recorded 41 tackles as a junior and looks to return to Denton next year.

Gavin Freeman, WR, Oklahoma State

An Oklahoma legacy, Gavin Freeman chose to cross Bedlam lines last year.

Freeman played the first four games of the season before redshirting his first year in Stillwater. In those four games, Freeman caught six passes for 45 yards. He also returned punts and kickoffs.

As a redshirt junior, Freeman will now look to replace Brennan Presley, who left OSU as the Cowboys' all-time leader in receptions.

Had he stayed at OU, though, Freeman might have emerged as one of the Sooners' top receivers after so many injuries to the position this season. However, longterm, Freeman most likely would have ended up in the tranfer portal this year anyway.

D.J. Graham, CB, Utah State

D.J. Graham was on the field quite a bit for the Sooners, making 12 starts in four seasons, but left after missing all of the 2023 season because of an injury.

And after one season at Utah State, Graham is on the move again back in the transfer portal for the second time. He could be a hot commodity this time, though, after a stellar season with the Aggies.

Graham had 42 tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles, two interceptions and two pass breakups this season. He could have been a huge assett for Zac Alley's defense this season.

So far, Graham has reported offers from Louisville, Oklahoma State and UConn, but a reunion with OU doesn't look likely.
