What a night to be a Sooner on an MLB mound.
Former Oklahoma pitchers Cade Horton and Cade Cavalli both tossed gems on Wednesday night. The pair combined for 10 scoreless innings while striking out 12 batters, walking just one helping their respective club get an important win down the stretch.
Cade Horton, Cade Cavalli both throw gems
Horton has been historically good as a rookie this season for the Chicago Cubs. His scoreless 5.2 innings Wednesday extended his scoreless innings streak to 23.1 innings, which, according to MLB, is the longest scoreless streak ever by a Cubs rookie.
While getting his sixth win of the season, Horton also improved his season ERA to 3.18 with 58 strikeouts. He hasn't given up a run in five of his last six starts, including the last four in a row.
A homegrown product from Norman North High School, Horton was part of the Sooners' 2022 College World Series team before getting drafted No. 7 overall in that year's MLB Draft. He had started this season in Triple-A before making his MLB debut on May 10.
Cavalli has had a much rougher season than his fellow Sooner. Cavalli's outing Wednesday night with the Washington Nationals was his first MLB start since his MLB debut nearly three years ago on Aug. 26, 2022. Between Tommy John Surgery, injuries, rehab assignments and more complications, Cavalli had been sidelined for nearly three years.
He's back now, though, after throwing a three-hit 4.1 innings with six strikeouts in his return. Cavalli didn't get the W, but the Nationals still beat the Athletics 2-1 with a walk-off.
“It means a lot,” Cavalli told reporters after the game. “It’s been a long almost-three years now. It was just great being on that mound again. There’s been a lot of leadup to it. I pictured that day a lot, and I’m just glad it was finally here and that we were able to get a win.”
Cade Cavalli is so back!
