It is often said that linebacker is like the quarterback of the defense. They are required to know the responsibilities of the other positions, make sure everyone is lined up correctly, communicate audibles and, most importantly, hit the snot out of ball carriers. Most football fans agree that a high-caliber offense is the most exciting thing in the game. A minority of fans prefer to watch a dominant defense completely nullify the other team, though, which is why one of Oklahoma fan’s favorite players to watch last year was linebacker Owen Heinecke.Â
Sooner fans rejoiced when the news dropped that Heinecke was granted another year of eligibility after suing the NCAA. While waiting during the appeal process, Heinecke attended the NFL Combine and impressed NFL teams with both his athletic performance and his interviews. Knowing Heinecke is an NFL-level talent is a huge boost for the Sooners' defense and foretells a possible run at a 2026 Butkus Award, which is given to the best linebacker in college football.
Is Owen Heinecke a contender for the 2026 Butkus Award?
Texas Tech's Jacob Rodriguez, the 2025 Butkus Award winner, had one of the best seasons of a linebacker in recent memory. Rodriguez played 14 games and posted 128 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, four interceptions, a fumble return and one sack. This all led him to the Butkus Award and a College Football Playoff appearance at the end of the season.
How does this compare to Heinecke’s 2025 season?
In 2025, Heinecke had 74 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss and three sacks in one less game. One of those sacks caused the forced fumble that led to the unforgettable R. Mason Thomas touchdown against Tennessee. While some of those numbers are a ways back from Rodriguez, context is always important. Heinecke played fewer snaps and endured Oklahoma’s daunting schedule that ESPN considered the toughest in the country. Texas Tech, meanwhile, had one of the easiest schedules in the country.Â

For the 2026 season, Heinecke will undoubtedly play more snaps than the previous season due to departures from the Sooner defense. Joined by fellow linebackers Cole Sullivan and Kip Lewis, Heinecke stands poised to improve on his numbers in yet another tough Oklahoma schedule.Â

Keep an eye on Heinecke this season. He plays fast and smart, which is a key characteristic of a Brent Venables defender. Recognizing offenses and seeing where the ball is going before it happens is one of the strongest traits a linebacker can have, and Heinecke has it. If he improves as he should, we will see the national spotlight hone in on Heinecke as a top candidate for the 2026 Butkus Award.Â
