OU fans still have every reason to trust the Sooners despite shrinking Michigan spread

The spread for Oklahoma vs. Michigan has been doing some weird things, which has those pulling for the Sooners feeling a little uneasy, especially OU fans.

After what felt like maybe an overreaction to Michigan’s poor Week 1 performance, there was a dramatic swing that eventually had the Sooners as big as 6.5-point favorites, according to FanDuel. The spread on Friday, though, settled at 4.5 points despite the college football betting world being ready to put money on OU no matter what the spread was at.

Obviously OU fans are confident in their Sooners, but apparently so is everyone else, with OU being the trendiest bet in college football this week. But that spread suddenly dipping has many concerned and asking, “Does Vegas know something we don’t?”

Despite the game not kicking off until 11 a.m. CT Saturday in Ann Arbor, this marquee matchup between two blue-bloods already warranted a betting line way back in April. The Wolverines, despite having a new head coach in Kyle Whittingham and losing to OU last season, opened as 2.5-point favorites.

The game was still five months away, but at that point, Vegas could at least plan for two evenly matched teams and the Wolverines having home-field advantage at The Big House. That was likely enough to put the needle just barely in Michigan’s favor.

But a lot has changed since April. Heck, a lot has changed since last Saturday.

Michigan looked abysmal in its season opener against Western Michigan and needed a mysterious extra second added to the clock to complete a Hail Mary pass that won the game 13-12. College football fans knew right then that the Wolverines were in deep trouble with the Sooners on their way to Ann Arbor a week later.

A few hours after the game ended for a second time, Michigan’s extremely early edge had suddenly vanished. When the game popped back up on the list of betting options on FanDuel late last Saturday night, OU was a 4.5-point favorite.

By Sunday morning, the spread had inflated to 5.5 points. It then peaked at 6.5 points on Sunday afternoon, as bettors clearly had lost all hope in the Wolverines after what they watched the night before.

The spread has since shrunk before settling at 4.5 points now. In reality, even if Michigan plummeted out of the rankings and looked helpless against a MAC team, this is still a fair spread.

OU head coach Brent Venables made it clear this week that he hasn’t lost any respect for the Wolverines because of one showing. He’s looking at this matchup with a level head and understands Michigan is still Michigan. Vegas oddsmakers are likely doing the same while trying not to overreact.

A shrinking betting spread shouldn’t also shrink your confidence in the Sooners. Oklahoma is still a favorite in a place the Wolverines have won 32 of their last 35 games. Even Vegas still plans on the Sooners taking care of business.
