Oklahoma freshman Alec Blair’s college basketball career ultimately lasted three minutes.

Blair signed with the Sooners in 2025 as a two-sport athlete planning to play both basketball and baseball, but Brody Lusk of OU Insider reported Wednesday that Blair is no longer on OU’s basketball team and will focus on baseball.

Alec Blair no longer on OU basketball team

The Sooners tipped off their season Monday night with a 102-66 win over St Francis. Blair came off the bench and played three minutes in the victory, which was the second-fewest among those who got in behind fellow freshman Jake Hansen’s one minute of action. In that minimal action, Blair made a free throw and pulled down a rebound for what will end up being his career stats in the sport.

According to Lusk, Blair missed practice on Wednesday, then texted the team afterward to notify them of his decision to leave the program. It certainly puts OU head coach Porter Moser in an early bind after having just nine scholarship players available for the season opener because of multiple injuries.

Regardless, Blair will forever get to say he played two different sports at the Division-I level, as long as he steps on the baseball diamond eventually.

It was initially uncertain if Blair would ever even get to OU’s campus to play anything at all. He was a 2025 MLB Draft prospect out of De La Salle High School in California, but then surprisingly went unselected in April because of his interest to go to college to play two sports.

Listed at 6-foot-7, Blair was a top-100 recruit in both sports. According to 247Sports, Blair was a four-star recruit, as well as the No. 60 overall player and No. 14 small forward in the 2025 class. As a baseball player, Blair was the No. 85 overall prospect and No. 17 outfielder, according to Perfect Game. MLB.com ranked him as high as the No. 52 MLB Draft prospect, which is why it was such a shock when Blair went undrafted.

However, even though his recruiting rankings favored him more as a basketball player, baseball has always been Blair’s top priority and his best opportunity to play a sport for a long time for a living.
