With all the offseason changes made by Oklahoma, the Sooners were believed to be a much improved team heading into the 2025 college football season, especially on offense.

Oklahoma has won four straight games to begin the season and will likely add No. 5 to that string when it hosts Kent State on Saturday. The Sooners won only six games all of last season.

The numbers through the opening month of the season certainly support the notion that this Oklahoma team is much different, more complete and more exciting to watch than its immediate predecessor that finished tied for next to last a year ago in its first SEC season.

Sooners proving improvement with 4-0 start

This week, Paul Myerberg of USA Today Sports recognized the Sooners' turnaround, naming them the most improved team through the month of September. Oklahoma was one of four SEC programs and/or individuals who graded out high through the first five weeks of the season.

"After fumbling through a rocky SEC debut, the Sooners have quickly rebounded thanks to a drastic offensive reboot that included the addition of transfer quarterback John Mateer," Myerberg wrote. "While Mateer's hand injury could sideline him for a month, Oklahoma remains a major playoff contender with conference play about to kick into high gear. A difficult schedule gives them some wiggle room if the Sooners can bag some quality wins."

The Sooners have started the season 4-0 and already have a pair of ranked wins over Michigan and Auburn at home. It's likely the 2024 version of the Sooners would have lost to both of those teams.

Vanderbilt was named the surprise team of September, Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss was the breakout star and head coach Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss was best coach, according to Myerberg.
