After a season of going up, up, up, the Oklahoma baseball team is now going down.
As expected after a rough weekend, the Sooners crashed nine spots in the latest D1Baseball Top 25 from No. 10 to No. 19. It was OU's biggest drop of the season.
Sooners fall out of top 10 in latest D1Baseball Top 25 after series loss to LSU
The Sooners deserved to descend down the rankings after getting swept by the LSU Tigers last weekend in Norman. LSU took Game 1 2-0 on Thursday, then beat OU 10-2 on Friday and 3-2 in Game 3 to complete the sweep.
The sweep of the Sooners bumped LSU from No. 7 to No. 3 with a 30-3 record. The top 25 included 10 SEC teams this week. The SEC made up almost the entire top 5 with No. 1 Arkansas, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 LSU and No. 5 Tennessee, which lost the top spot after losing a series to Texas A&M.
That means an incredibly tough road ahead for the Sooners to either continue their plummet or quickly rise back up to the top with a few upsets. Two of OU's next three SEC weekend series are against top-20 teams.
The Sooners will host No. 17 Vanderbilt this weekend before somewhat of a break against Missouri. Then, OU will hit the road to play No. 7 Georgia.
And that gauntlet doesn't count for a midweek home game against Dallas Baptist on Wednesday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The Sooners already lost to the Patriots earlier this season. However, DBU is struggling and just dropped out of the rankings after losing a series to Western Kentucky.
The Sooners also have a midweek Bedlam clash against Oklahoma State next week in Stillwater.
After a hot 11-0 start, the Sooners now sit at 23-8 while going 5-6 in SEC play. During that run, OU rose from being unranked to inside the top 10.
