Oklahoma set to host top-10 SEC baseball series

Another top-15 challenge for the Sooners.

Oklahoma faces a top-15 SEC opponent for the second time in as many weekends as No. 7 LSU comes to Norman for a three-game series.

The LSU series has been moved to a Thursday-Saturday sequence because of the anticipation of inclement weather on Sunday.

No. 10 Sooners host No. 7 LSU this weekend

Oklahoma comes into the series with a 23-5 overall record and ranked 10th in the country, according to the latest D1Baseball Top 25. The Sooners are 5-4 in the conference and are coming off a series at Alabama in which OU lost two of three.

Meanwhile, LSU is 27-3 and has won 21 of its last 23 games, including a series sweep over Mississippi State last weekend. Oklahoma won two of three at home from Mississippi State the weekend before last.

This will be the 14th meeting all-time between the Sooners and Tigers, and first as members of the SEC. LSU leads the series 9-4. All but three of those games were played in Baton Rouge. This weeklend's series will be the first time the two teams have played in Norman.

The game on Thursday night will start at 6 p.m. CT, Friday's start time is 6:30 p.m. and first pitch for the series finale on Sunday will be at 2 p.m. The Thursday night game will be televised on ESPN2. The games on Friday and Saturday can be viewed on SEC Network+.

Oklahoma

  • Oklahoma is 15-1 this season a L. Dale Mitchell Park and is outscoring opponents 137-61. The Sooners also hold a 19-6 home-run advantage playing at home.
  • The Sooners have stolen 74 bases this season, No. 1 in the SEC and 16th in the country.
  • The OU pitching staff ranks 35th in Division-I baseball with a 4.22 team ERA. The staff is led by junior right-handed starter Kyson Witherspoon, who is 5-1 in seven starts with a 2.31 earned-run average and has a 64-to-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio, which ranks sixth in the country.
  • Six players in the Oklahoma starting lineup are batting above .300 through 28 games.

LSU

  • LSU leads the SEC with a team batting average of .337. The Tigers also rank second in the SEC and third nationally in on-base percentage (.456).
  • Tigers first baseman Jared Jones ranks No. 2 in the SEC in total bases (90), No. 2 in hits (47), No. 3 in runs scored (40) and No. 4 in both runs batted in (46) and home runs (11).
  • The LSU pitching staff is No. 2 in the conference in strikeouts (338) and No. 5 in opponents' batting average (.216).
  • The Tigers' 7-2 conference record through nine games is their best start in league play since the 2013 LSU team went 8-1.
