The Oklahoma football team could have filled an entire newspaper with news coming out of the Barry Switzer this week, but there's also been a lot going on elsewhere around campus.
This week started with Brent Venables firing offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and promoting Jason Witten as play-caller for the final four games of the season. Quarterback John Mateer could also be the next change for the Sooners' struggling offense.
All that overshadowed a looming trip to play No. 24 Florida for the Sooners' first visit to The Swamp.
Here's news you might have missed about your Sooners, with an emphasis on sports that might get overlooked in the midst of football season.
OU men's basketball has chance to rebound
OU men's basketball's 2026-27 debut couldn't have gone worse than its embarrassing 68-64 loss to East Texas A&M after entering the matchup as a 28.5-point favorite. Thankfully for Porter Moser's squad, they have all season to recover and hopefully force us to forget all about the opener.
The Sooners get their next chance at their first win of the season on Friday night, when they host Mississippi Valley State for the annual McCasland Game at McCasland Field House. This could either be OU's first win of the season or an even worse loss than the first, and should have athletic director Roger Denny firing Moser on the court.
Mississippi Valley State went 3-30 last season. One of those defeats was a 93-69 loss to the Sooners. This should be another guaranteed win for OU, but so should the last one.

Aaliyah Chavez in a category of her own
One of the 15 players included on the Wade Trophy Watch List, which was released on Wednesday, was not like the others.
OU sophomore point guard Aaliyah Chavez was the only underclassman on the initial watch list for the Wade Trophy, which is awarded to the top player in women's college basketball. It's clear Chavez is the future of women's college basketball, and also the now.
Chavez enters her sophomore campaign with extremely high expectations after being named ESPN National Freshman of the Year and CBS Sports National Freshman of the Year last season. She immediately lived up to the hype as the No. 1 prospect in the 2025 class.
The Sooners upset No. 12 North Carolina in their season opener, as Chavez stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, five rebounds, six assists, two blocks, and two steals. It was the 29th game in a row in which Chavez scored double digits.
OU soccer trio gets All-SEC honors
Three Sooners were honored by the SEC as the soccer regular season enters the postseason with the SEC Tournament this weekend. Kayla Keefer was named First-Team All-SEC, while Elle Canty was on the Third Team, and Kate McCallister was SEC All-Freshman.
Keefer earned the first-team recognition after leading the country in goals (20), points (43), and was second in goals per game (1.11). She also set the OU single-season goals and points record.
The All-SEC trio and the Sooners enter the SEC Tournament as the No. 7 seed, with a match against No. 10 Georgia at 11:30 a.m. CT on Sunday in Pensacola, Florida.
