Just as it seemed like everything was going right for the 4-0 Oklahoma Sooners led by a Heisman Trophy frontrunner, the Sooners suffered their worst loss of the season during their bye week.

OU announced on Tuesday that quarterback John Mateer injured his throwing hand in the first quarter against Auburn on Saturday and will have surgery on Wednesday, and it was difficult news for Sooner Nation to process. Piecing together multiple reports, Mateer is expected to be sidelined for about a month, meaning he will likely miss the Red River Rivalry against the Texas Longhorns on Oct. 11.

Mateer had restored hope among Sooner Nation since transferring from Washington State this offseason and becoming a Heisman Trophy favorite as the Sooners' QB1. Even after suffering the injury in the first quarter, Mateer still led the Sooners to an SEC victory thanks to his eventual game-winning touchdown run after marching OU down the field.

Through four games, Mateer led the SEC with 1,215 passing yards and is second in FBS with 351.2 total yards a game. Now, sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. will start in his place.

As OU's Bedlam counterparts were still processing the news of head coach Mike Gundy getting fired after (almost) 21 seasons at Oklahoma State, Sooner Nation then got its own issue to deal with.

But, on the bright side, Mateer will be back eventually, so not all hope is lost.
