Oklahoma reached a new milestone in the Brent Venables coaching era over the weekend, and the Sooners didn't even have to play a football game to achieve it. The Sooners were the No. 5 team this week in the Associated Press Top 25, moving up two spots from No. 7 a week ago.
The Sooners were off this past week and return to action on Saturday, hosting Kent State at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. OU also moved up a couple of spots in the Coaches Poll from No. 10 a week ago to No. 8 this week. Despite a bye week, Oklahoma reaped the benefits of four AP top-10 teams going down on Saturday.

With No. 4 LSU and No. 5 Georgia falling to No. 13 Ole Miss and No. 18 Alabama, respectively, on Saturday, and No. 3 Penn State losing to No. 6 Oregon, the natural result was plenty of movement and disruption in the top-10 rankings in both the AP and Coaches Poll for Week 6 of the 2025 college season. No. 8 Florida State also lost over the weekend.
Ohio State, ranked No. 1 for the fifth consecutive week, was the only team in the AP top 10 that did not change positions this week
Under Venables, the Sooners have never been ranked higher than No. 6 in the AP Top 25. Oklahoma was ranked No. 6 in consecutive weeks early in Venables' first season as the Sooners' head coach in 2022 and was ranked as high as No. 6 in the AP Top 25 seven games into the 2023 season, their final season in the Big 12.
Since joining the SEC, 15th was the highest Oklahoma had been ranked in the AP poll before this season. The Sooners began the 2025 season at No. 18 in the AP preseason poll and were unranked in the preseason Coaches Poll. After the win over then-No. 15 Michigan, the Sooners moved up to No. 13 in the AP poll, No. 11 in Week 4 and up to No. 7 last week.
At the beginning of this season, six SEC teams (Texas, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, South Carolina and Florida) were ranked ahead of Oklahoma in the AP Top 25, including four in the top 10. This week, only Ole Miss, which advanced nine spots to No. 4 following its 24-19 win over LSU on Saturday, ranks higher than the Sooners.
The new Associated Press top 10 this week featured Ohio State, Oregon, Miami, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Penn State, Indiana, Texas and Alabama, respectively.
Not surprisingly, LSU, Georgia, Ole Miss and Alabama were the biggest movers in the national rankings from last week. LSU fell nine spots in the AP poll, while Ole Miss advanced upward by the same number. Similarly, Georgia dropped down seven spots while Alabama moved up seven spots.
Florida State, however, took the biggest tumble from the previous week. The Seminoles' 46-38 loss at Virginia cost them 10 spots in the AP poll (from No. 8 to 18) and 11 spots in the Coaches Poll (to No. 19).
