The No. 1 softball team in the country is still climbing in rankings.
The Oklahoma Sooners are No. 15 in the latest RPI rankings as of games played through Monday. That's a monstorous jump of 11 spots after being No. 26 in the first RPI rankings of the season last week.
That still seems low, though, for the Sooners, who are No. 1 in every major college softball poll as the only undefeated team still standing at 22-0.
OU is still getting knocked for its lackluster nonconference slate to begin the season. The Sooners played just one ranked team before SEC play started this past weekend. And that team, then-No. 23 Baylor, hasn't been in a top-25 since and has been battling to stay above .500.
That weak start was strategic for Patty Gasso, though, before the Sooners started their first season in the SEC while reloading nearly their entire roster after winning a fourth straight national championship last season.
The Sooners started their new SEC era with a sweep over then-No. 10 South Carolina last weekend at Love's Field. The Gamecocks and OU started the weekend as the last two undefeated teams left in college softball, but South Carolina left Norman on a three-game losing streak.
After just one SEC series, the Sooners already saw a drastic leap in the RPI rankings, which is calculated using a team's winning percentage, its opponents' winning percentage and its opponents' opponents' winning percentage. If they continue to have weekends like this last one, the Sooners will also be atop the RPI rankings along with every major poll in no time.
Every conference series but one on OU's schedule is against a ranked opponent. The Sooners joined eight other SEC programs in the top 15 of the RPI rankings. Twelve are included in the top 25.
This weekend, the Sooners travel to Arkansas for the weekend to play the No. 10 Razorbacks, who are No. 16 just behind OU in the RPI rankings.
