Oklahoma ranks among the best all-time in football wins over No. 1 teams

Oklahoma is one of 10 schools at the FBS level of college football with as many as 900 all-time wins. The Sooners have amassed 950 total wins in 130 years, which ranks sixth-best all-time.

Since 1946, or the end of World War II, however, no college team has more wins than Oklahoma at 706.

A win is a win, as sports fans like to say, but not all wins are created equal. Another overworked truism we hear a lot from coaches at all levels is: To be the best, you have to beat the best.

As one of the winningest teams in college football history, you know that the Sooners have won plenty of games against some of the best the sport has to offer.

Aside from perhaps winning a major bowl game or the College Football Playoff championship, there is no win more gratifying than knocking off the nation's No. 1 team.

The college football staff at Sports Illustrated's On SI website looked into this subject and came up with a list of the teams that have taken down the most No. 1 opponents.

According to Sports Illustrated's research, 13 teams have beaten or tied a No. 1 team at least four times. Perhaps not surprising, Oklahoma has accomplished this seven times in the Associated Press Poll era. That is tied with three other teams -- Ohio State, Purdue and USC -- for fourth most all-time.

Because the Sooners rank third all-time in the most weeks ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll, it's probably also a reasonable assumption that Oklahoma is up there in the number of times being the victim of a No. 1 upset.

Oklahoma's most recent victory over a No. 1 team was against Missouri in the 2007 Big 12 Championship Game.

Interestingly, former Sooner head coach Barry Switzer was a part of six of OU's seven such accomplishments. The Sooners tied No. 1 USC in Switzer's first season in 1973 and defeated top-ranked Penn State in the Orange Bowl in the 1985 season. OU also tied No. 1 Texas in 1984, the same season the Sooners knocked Nebraska out of the No. 1 ranking.

Oklahoma knocked off Nebraska three times while the Huskers were ranked No. 1 (1984, 1987 and 2000).

Bob Stoops was head coach of the 2000 Oklahoma team that defeated No. 1 Nebraska and replaced the Cornhuskers in the top spot. In a three-week span that season, the Sooners took down No. 11 Texas, No. 2 Kansas State and No. 1 Nebraska, and went on to a perfect 13-0 record and OU's seventh and most recent national championship.

As a member now of the heavyweight SEC, there's a real good chance Oklahoma is going to have the opportunity to add to its No. 1 conquests. Getting the opportunity, after all, is half the battle.
