Finally, we heard from the man himself, and he brought some good news.
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer posted via X on Thursday to confirm that surgery on his throwing hand was a success and also gave a shoutout to new Sooners fan-favorite Dr. Steven Shin.

OU announced on Tuesday that Mateer would need surgery on his right hand after injuring it in the first quarter against Auburn on Saturday. There's still no firm timeframe for Mateer's return, but according to multiple reports, the Heisman frontrunner will be sidelined multiple weeks, and it's still unknown if he'll be healthy enough to play against Texas in the Red River Rivalry on Oct. 11.
“Not really interested in going through a timeline,” said OU head coach Brent Venables on Wednesday's SEC’s weekly teleconference when asked about Mateer's return. “It’s not really important now.”
Although Mateer quickly became a fan-favorite since transferring from Washington State this offseason, Dr. Steven Shin, who performed his surgery on Wednesday in Los Angeles, might have become even more beloved even quicker by Sooner Nation as he had the Sooners' season basically in his hands.
Mateer joined Dr. Shin's patient list that also includes Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star Jalen Williams, former New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love, Golden State Warriors All-Star guard Stephen Curry, Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff and more big-time athletes.
