There might only be two, but there's no longer any argument the Oklahoma Sooners have the best SEC wrestling team.
The No. 22 Sooners beat the No. 20 Missouri Tigers 23-13 on Saturday in Norman. Although for SEC bragging rights and between two universities that call the SEC home, it was actually a dual between two Big 12 wrestling programs.
OU and Missouri are affiliate members of the Big 12 since the SEC does not have wrestling and no other schools in the conference have the sport. The Big 12 has several other affiliate members for wrestling.
The Big 12 Wrestling Championships will be March 8-9 at BOK Center in Tulsa.
Saturday's win improved OU to 7-4 this season and 3-4 in Big 12 action. It ended a three-dual losing streak against ranked conference opponents for the Sooners.
The dual started with four wins for OU to take a 12-0 lead the Sooners never lost. Mizzou won back-to-back matches at 157 and 165 pounds after OU's early run, but then the Sooners got bonus points the next two matches to seal things.
This was the first time since 2017 the Sooners beat Missouri on the mat. After leaving for the SEC and joining the MAC for wrestling, the Tigers didn't re-join the Big 12 until 2021, so this was the first time the Sooners took down Mizzou as conference foes again.
It was also the first time in a series that started in 1923 that the two met for SEC bragging rights, igniting a rivalry on the mat.
Before the Big 12 tournament, the Sooners will take a road trip to Arizona State next weekend after getting this week off.
