What seemed like a dream that would never actually come true, the Oklahoma Sooners' new arena and expanded game-day area, deemed the Round Creek Entertainment District, is finally a reality.

Rainier Development Company, which is the developer of the project, announced on Thursday that ground will officially be broken for the Round Creek Entertainment District during a ceremony on Tuesday near the future site near I-35 and Rock Creek Road in Norman.

Round Creek Entertainment District groundbreaking coming to settle doubts on new arena

The billion-dollar Round Creek Entertainment District will be centered around a new arena that will host OU men's and women's basketball, as well as women's gymnastics, to replace the outdated Lloyd Noble Center, which opened in 1975. The new arena is expected to have a capacity of about 8,000, compared to over 11,000 at LNC, which is usually mostly empty, especially for men's basketball games recently.

The area, which will now be under the direction of new OU athletic director Roger Denny, will also include hotels, restaurants, housing and more to create a better spot for both sporting events and concerts year around.

This moment has been years in the making after not only all the planning, but about two years worth of legal battles against the project. When all this started, the hope was for the arena to be ready by the 2027-28 basketball seasons. Now, it's looking more like 2029-30 after the two-year delay.

In February, The City of Norman revealed that the gist of the petition that was hindering the entertainment district project was ruled insufficient by the Oklahoma Supreme Court. Even after that, though, there were still rumblings of more petitions and delays.

Those delays had OU fans starting to worry if they'd ever actually watch the Sooners play in a new arena, but with ground finally being broken and construction soon starting, a new arena in Norman is finally as real as it's ever been.
