Oklahoma men's basketball player Jeremiah Fears was named SEC Freshman of the Week.
Fears had a phenomenal week last week in games against No. 2 Florida and No. 21 Mississippi State, averaging 24.5 points, five rebounds and six assists while shooting 52% from the field, 46% from behind the 3-point arc and 79% from the free-throw line. His 49 total points last week led all SEC freshmen (the next best was 29 points).
In a Sooner loss earlier in the week at Florida, Fears posted a game-high 22 points, including a career-high three 3-pointers. He also collected five rebounds and two assists.
Fears was a prime reason Oklahoma defeated Mississippi State on Saturday, registering his first career double-double, scoring 27 points and a career-best 10 assists in the Sooners' 93-87 win. Eleven of his 27 points were at the free-throw line, making 11 of 14.
The Joliet, Illinois, native is just the second SEC player regardless of class since the 1996-97 season to score at least 27 points, register as many as 10 assists and pull in five rebounds in a single game. Sharife Cooper of Auburn was the only other.
The OU freshman is the only SEC player to rank in the top 10 in the conference in scoring (10th at 15.9), field-goal percentage (10th at 44.4) and free-throw percentage (83.9).
This is the third Freshman of the Week award bestowed on Fears this season by the SEC.
Oklahoma hosts No. 17 Kentucky on Wednesday at Lloyd Noble Center.
