Everyone who watches women's college basketball knows Oklahoma point guard Aaliyah Chavez is the best freshman in the SEC, except for the coaches who got to vote and actually decide.
Two OU players received SEC honors on Tuesday as senior center Raegan Beers was named First-Team All-SEC for the second year in a row. Chavez was included on the second team and was also All-Freshman. However, despite a historical rookie campaign, Chavez was snubbed from Freshman of the Year honors, with Vanderbilt guard Aubrey Galvan getting the recognition instead.
Vanderbilt's Aubrey Galvan named SEC Freshman of the Year over Chavez
SEC head coaches vote for each award and coaches cannot vote for their own player, which means OU head coach Jennie Baranczyk really should have been the only vote for Galvan, but only because she was forced to.
Even the votes from the SEC coaches were hypocritical of the outcome, though. Those same coaches voted that Chavez was good enough to be Second-Team All-SEC, yet Galvan was not included on either the first or second team. So, according to SEC coaches, Chavez is the only freshman considered to be one of the best players in the conference regardless of class, but still somehow not the best freshman.
There's really no comparing Chavez and Galvan, but now we've been forced to in order to point out the absurdity of all this. Galvan is on the better team with Vanderbilt ranked fifth in the country and the Sooners sitting at No. 7 heading into the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament this week. Vandy also beat the Sooners 102-86 this season.
But this is an individual award.
Galvan is second on her team averaging 12.9 points a game behind SEC Player of the Year Mikayla Blakes' staggering 27.1. Assists is the only stat that Galvan leads the Commodores in with 5.9 a game.
Chavez leads the Sooners with 18.4 points, 4.2 assists, 73 three-pointers and 32.4 minutes a game. She's also averaging 1.5 steals and 3.8 rebounds. Chavez also set an SEC record for most consecutive made free throws with a current streak of 49.
If the numbers weren't enough, even the SEC had Chavez destined to be Freshman of the Year. Just this week, Chavez was named SEC Freshman of the Week for the eighth time, compared to Galvan's five times. Chavez' eight selections for the weekly award tied for the most ever in a single season.
Nothing logical actually points to Chavez being considered the second-best freshman in the SEC. She might even be deemed the best freshman in the entire country in a few weeks, which will really make the SEC coaches look foolish.
After the news, irate OU fans made sure to point out how ridiculous this decision was, including new athletic director Roger Denny.

It seems legitimately impossible that Aaliyah Chavez did not win SEC Freshman of the Year

Pardon me, but I need to call out an absolute SHAM that has taken place with the @SEC WBB season awards

THE COACHES in the league have voted someone not named @AALIYAH2CHAVEZ as Freshman of the Year in the conference 🤡
Every single coach that didn’t vote for Aaliyah should be… pic.twitter.com/QzmnYoQPt9

SEC coaches BIG MAD that Aaliyah Chavez has outshined all of their freshmen this year.

That's the only explanation for Chavez not getting SEC freshman of the year.
lol how do you get SEC freshman of the week EIGHT times and not get freshman of the year? Chavez will probably get national freshman of the year and SEC coaches will have egg on their face again https://t.co/WfVjB90zKV
