You've got to be heartbroken for Oklahoma kicker Tate Sandell right now, unless you're an Alabama fan of course. With the game on the line in the fourth quarter and Oklahoma down 34-24, the standout had a 36-yard field goal sail wide on him.
Even an Alabama legend was in awe of Oklahoma's CFP environment
You can't make this stuff up. The guy who is automatic from over 50 yards missed a chip shot he normally drills in his sleep? At first, it looked quite clear that Sandell missed it, but a closer look at things has some people thinking that maybe, just maybe, the kick was good and the refs blew the call?
Oklahoma star kicker Tate Sandell misses a 36-yard field goal (maybe).

Tate Sandell had a heartbreaking end to his incredible Oklahoma 2025 season
As you can see in the video above, Chris Fowler was convinced himself that the kick was good. However, since the pigskin went higher than the upright, it had to be clear that the entire ball went through and not just a part of it.
That was the explanation that came in, but when you go to the 1:50 mark of the clip, doesn't it look like the ball sneaks in? The officials thought otherwise and things stayed a 10-point game. Had that FG been good, it would have changed everything for the Sooners.
I donβt think he missed that Field Goal.

He made that kick but whatever.

No way that is a missed field goal

Iβm not sure he actually missed that field goal.

Oklahoma's defense was able to get a stop and put the ball back in John Mateer's hands. Had the score been 34-27, the Sooners would have been in a position to try to tie the game in the final seconds. Instead, with the clock winding down, Brent Venables sent Sandell out to try a 51-yard field goal.
That attempt fell short and then Ty Simpson and Alabama were able to run out the clock with some kneels. It was just a heartbreaking end to the season for the Sooners and especially Sandell. A quick look on social media shows that plenty of people think his short kick was actually good and that the Sooners were robbed a bit. The play was not reviewable, unfortunately. Now, people in Norman are going to be left wondering what could have been.
