The Oklahoma Sooners got a late start in a lot of races for top 2026 recruits, so hopefully this is a sign that won't be the case again for the 2027 group.

Rivals' Adam Gorney listed a group of programs as early frontrunners for 2027 athlete Honor Fa'alave-Johnson, including OU, Texas, Miami, Oregon and Penn State. However, it's still too early for 2027 prospects to start seriously narrowing down their list of options.

Honor Fa'alave-Johnson looking at Sooners early in process

On3, ESPN and 247Sports have Fa'alave-Johnson listed as a safety, while Rivals has him as a running back. Regardless of position, though, he's a consensus four-star recruit out of Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, California.

According to Greg Biggins' evaluation on 247Sports, Fa'alave-Johnson, listed at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, is good enough to play four different positions at the college level, including safety, cornerback, running back and wide receiver. Biggins wrote that 247Sports likes Fa'alave-Johnson most as a safety or wide receiver, with his highest upside as a safety.

Fa'alave-Johnson missed five games last season after transferring, but he still had 18 tackles and two interceptions while returning one for a touchdown. He rushed for 154 yards and two TDs with five receptions for 42 yards in limited opportunities as a sophomore. Fa'alave-Johnson then participated in the Navy All-American Bowl and Polynesian Bowl.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Fa'alave-Johnson is the No. 4 safety in the 2027 class and No. 35 overall prospect. Rivals ranks him as the No. 8 running back in the class.

Outside of the previously mentioned early frontrunners, Fa'alave-Johnson already has reported offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, USC and plenty more.

The Sooners offered back on April 12.

So far, OU doesn't have a commitment from the 2027 class, but it's still extremely early in the process and the Sooners just recently shifted focus to that class with most attention still on 2026 prospects.
