There was speculation that Reggie Powers III could emerge as a major contributor on the Oklahoma Sooners' defense in 2025, and now that definitely seems likely with Powers reportedly getting a chance at two different positions.

Rivals' Parker Thune reported on Friday from the Sooners' second practice of fall camp that Powers, listed as a sophomore defensive back, got first-team reps at both strong safety and cheetah while media was at practice.

Powers was a consensus four-star recruit in the 2024 class before appearing in all but one game as a freshman last year. He had four tackles between time in the secondary and on special teams.

The Sooners are looking for a new strong safety with Billy Bowman Jr. off to the NFL after starting there the past four seasons. That spot made the most sense for Powers after backing up Bowman last season, along with fellow sophomore Jaydan Hardy. One of Peyton Bowen or Robert Spears-Jennings could also move over from free safety to strong.

Cheetah was also an expected position battle for the Sooners, but Powers was not anticipated to be seriously involved there. Kendel Dolby had won that job last year, but then suffered a season-ending injury and played only three games. Dolby is back for his redshirt-senior campaign, but OU head coach Brent Venables said Dolby will also play some cornerback this season.

Sammy Omosigho, a junior, appeared in every game last season and made three starts at cheetah while Dolby was sidelined. The Sooners also added Oklahoma State transfer Kendal Daniels, who started at both safety and linebacker for the Cowboys, which makes him a great fit at cheetah.

With four viable options from different backgrounds, who plays cheetah for the Sooners could vary week by week depending on matchups and situations. It could also depend on where else these four versatile players are needed, especially if the Sooners suffer some injuries throughout the season.
