Michigan's cheap ticket prices could leave the Sooners without any disadvantage

Expectations are crashing down in Michigan, and so are ticket prices.

Oklahoma fans have pointed out all week on social media that ticket prices for the No. 11 Sooners’ game against Michigan at 11 a.m. CT Saturday in Ann Arbor are actually pretty cheap, considering it’s a historical matchup between two college football blue bloods. That has even influenced some of Sooner Nation to hop in a car (or plane) and make the nearly 15-hour drive to witness an expected OU win in person.

This is an obvious sign that hope has already vanished for the Wolverines after their non-loss to Western Michigan in Week 1, and also gives the Sooners even more confidence while erasing Michigan’s greatest advantage.

A quick look at the Gametime app, a secondary ticket marketplace that pulls from multiple sources, shows there are still plenty of empty seats looking to be filled less than 24 hours before kickoff. As of Friday morning, the cheapest ticket, when searching for two people, was $44 in Row 90 of Section 10, which is behind an end zone. There were also plenty of options available for less than $60. For comparison, most tickets were closer to $400 during the summer.

You can anticipate those prices to keep dropping leading up to kickoff, too.

If an OU fan really did want to make the trip to watch the game from inside The Big House, your biggest expense would be gas to get to Ann Arbor, not the tickets to actually attend. Your hotel room would also likely cost you more, so tickets could be your cheapest expense of the adventure.

The Sooners’ first-ever trip to the Big House was already drawing a large support system, but more faith in an OU win and cheaper tickets could result in a full Sooner Nation takeover. We’ll find out for sure on Saturday morning, and might even be able to hear a roar on TV when the Sooners enter a friendly environment.

This would be more of an embarrassment for a Michigan fan base that was already ridiculed last week for storming the field after the Wolverines barely beat Western Michigan with a Hail Mary miracle. There’s little respect for a fan base of a blue blood after celebrating a win over a MAC program like the Super Bowl, or one that can’t fill up a stadium to welcome a top-15 opponent.

That’s also trouble for a Michigan team that already has everything going against it. The Wolverines’ performance last week revealed they’ll be outmatched against OU, but at least they would be at home. Even before we really knew anything about either team over the offseason, Vegas still made Michigan a small favorite, presumably because the Wolverines would have home-field advantage.

Now, even home-field advantage might be lost for the Wolverines, especially if the Sooners jump out early. The Big Ten already dampened the atmosphere somewhat with its Big Noon Kickoff deal with FOX, making this an early kick instead of giving fans all day to get rowdy. The crowd would also be hushed if the Sooners assert themselves quickly with an early lead.

If things get too out of hand, the loudest those in Maize and Blue might get is to boo their own team, particularly quarterback Bryce Underwood, who is already in hot water with his head coach after costing Michigan a $12 million NIL package.

Suddenly, even the Wolverines’ greatest advantage to beat the Sooners is fading and could even disappear when Michigan needs it most.
