John Mateer will take his first snap for Oklahoma already with 12 starts under his belt.
Mateer committed to the Sooners as the No. 1 prospect in the transfer portal thanks to an impressive first season as Washington State's quarterback. Here's a closer look at how this season went for Mateer, game by game.
vs. Portland State (W, 70-30)
In his first career start, Mateer immediately set his career-high with five TD passes. He completed 11 of only 17 pass attempts in the blowout for 352 yards and no interceptions. He carried the ball only twice, but still found the end zone on an elusive 40-yard run and rushed for 55 yards.
vs. Texas Tech (W, 37-16)
Mateer used his legs to do just about everything to notch a commanding win over a Power Four opponent. He posted a career-high 197 rushing yards after carrying the rock 21 times, which also tied a season-high. Mateer completed only nine passes on 19 attempts, though, for a season-low 115 yards and a TD. He also threw his first interception of the season.
vs. Washington (W, 24-14)
This was big-time for the Cougars as Mateer led them to a win over their in-state rival. Mateer was well-rounded in the victory with 307 total yards between 245 through the air and 62 on the ground. He also scored three times — once passing and twice running.
vs. San Jose State (W, 54-52 2OT)
Wazzu needed two overtimes but still survived and remained unbeaten at 4-0. Mateer tossed a career-high 390 yards with four TDs on 26-of-46 passing. He did throw a pair of INTs, though, for his third straight game with a pick. Mateer again did it all, though, also rushing for 111 yards and another score.
at Boise State (L, 45-24)
In his first career road start, Mateer also suffered his first loss as QB1 to a future College Football Playoff team. Boise State held Mateer to a season-low 28 rushing yards on 20 carries. He was 26-of-37 for 327 yards, two TDs and an INT passing.
at Fresno State (W, 25-17)
Mateer threw a pick for the fifth game in a row, but that trend at least ended after this. He completed 17 of 35 passes for 172 yards and didn’t throw a TD. He carried the ball 18 times for 46 yards and got into the end zone this way once.
vs. Hawaii (W, 42-10)
Mateer was the most accurate he was all season, completing 85.2% of his passes (23-for-27). He had 295 passing yards and three TDs while ending his INT streak. He had only eight carries but still scored twice on the ground.
at San Diego State (W, 29-26)
Down 26–14 in the fourth quarter, Mateer led two TD drives to give the Cougars another win, including a game-winning 2-yard TD run with 5:03 left. He scored four times total — twice passing and twice rushing.
vs. Utah State (W, 49-28)
Mateer threw four TD passes and ran for another as the Cougars improved to 8-1. He had 179 passing yards and 55 rushing yards. This was Mateer's most recent win.
at New Mexico (L, 38-35)
This game started a three-game losing streak that concluded the season for Washington State. Mateer was still exceptional in this one, though, passing for 375 yards and four TDs. He also ran for 65 yards and another score.
at Oregon State (L, 41-38)
Mateer has actually never won a conference game as a starter still because of this loss. This loss wasn’t on him, though. He was 17-for-23 for 250 yards and two TDs, plus 75 rushing yards and another two scores.
vs Wyoming (L, 15-14)
This game ended a run of five straight outings without a pick for Mateer to conclude his career as a Cougar. Washington State was stifled overall, though, as Sooner Nation was already trying to get a glimpse of who was believed to be its next offensive coordinator.
Mateer was 16-for-22 with 182 passing yards and a TD. He rushed for 56 yards on 18 carries.
2024 season
Mateer ended his first season as a starter with 44 total TDs, which was more by anyone else in FBS this regular season. Passing, he had 3,139 yards, 29 TDs and seven INTs while completing 64.6% of his attempts. His 29 TDs were the fifth-most during the regular season.
Mateer rushed the ball 178 times for 826 yards and 15 scores and lost three fumbles. For comparison, Jackson Arnold led the Sooners with 150 carries, and Jovantae Barnes led OU with 577 rushing yards and five rushing scores.
