The legendary Selmon brothers wreaked defensive terror on Oklahoma's opponents from the early to mid-1970s, and earlier this week, Dewey, the middle born of the three Selmons, was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
The former Oklahoma defensive legend is one of 19 former players and three former coaches who made up the 2024 class of the College Football Hall of Fame.
Dewey Selmon played nose guard and defensive tackle on Barry Switzer's great Oklahoma teams in 1972-75. During that time, the Sooners were a combined 43-2-1, won four straight Big Eight championships and back-to-back national titles in 1974 and '75.
In 1974, Selmon was named a First-Team All-American and was a consensus All-America selection his senior season the following year.
Dewey was a starter on the OU defensive line in 1973-75. Those teams went 32-1-1 and yielded an average of 11.1 points a game. At the time he finished his career at Oklahoma, his 34 starts were the second most by a Sooner defensive lineman.
Dewey recorded 325 career tackles at OU and 25 tackles for loss. His 22 tackles in a 16-13 win over Texas in 1974 still stands as a single-game program record by a defensive lineman.
Following his career at Oklahoma, Dewey was selected in the second round of the 1976 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He spent six seasons with Tampa Bay and one with the San Diego Chargers before retiring.
Each of the OU teams the four seasons Dewey was at Oklahoma finished in the top three of the Associated Press Top 25 rankings. The 1972 Sooner team was the AP's No. 2 team and the 1973 team ended up No. 3.
All three of the Selmon brothers -- Lucious, Dewey and Lee Roy -- played together on the 1972 and 1973 Oklahoma teams. Dewey and Lee Roy were anchors on the OU defensive line in 1973-75.
One of the popular sayings of OU radio announcers Mike Treps and John Snyder during the time when Dewey and Lee Roy played at Oklahoma was, "Lee Roy buries 'em, and Dewey calls the next of kin."
Dewey was inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame in 2022. He becomes the 24th Oklahoma player, including brother Lee Roy, and fifth straight OU defensive player to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
