Don't call it an upset, but it definitely would be.
Hot off upsetting then-No. 1 Texas in the Red River Rivalry, the Oklahoma Sooners host No. 15 Kentucky at 6:30 p.m. CT Saturday for a chance at tallying massive upsets in back-to-back weeks. However, despite being an unranked squad taking on a top-15 team, OU is actually a 6.5-point favorite over the Wildcats, according to FanDuel.
What that means, if anything, is that it's actually not absurd to believe that the Sooners can pull off another big win to turn around the season after Sooner Nation felt like all hope was lost this time last week.
Game odds refresh periodically and are subject to change.
Here's predicting if the Sooners can really do it, plus three other things I see happening on Saturday.
John Mateer scores via air and ground
Kentucky head coach Will Stein spoke highly of OU quarterback John Mateer this week, so Mateer will make an honest man out of him.
Stein specifically mentioned Mateer being a threat as both a passer and a runner. Despite leading the team in carries, though, Mateer actually hasn’t run into the end zone yet this season, but that changes this weekend.
Kentucky is the weakest defense Mateer has faced since UTEP in Week 1. After a solid performance against Texas, Mateer builds on that for his best performance of the season, scoring his first rushing TD and also throwing for another score.
Mateer will never be a Heisman Trophy contender again, but he’ll at least be considered reliable again after Saturday.
Lloyd Avant becomes OU’s first 100-yard rusher of 2026
I’ve been burned by this prediction before this season, but it’s basically now or never for the Sooners to boast their first 100-yard rusher since Xavier Robinson accomplished the feat nearly a year ago against Ole Miss on Oct. 25, 2025.
Lloyd Avant is clearly the Sooners’ RB1 and best bet at reaching the century mark. He just averaged 7.2 yards per attempt against Texas while taking only 10 rushes for 72 yards and a TD. That number of carries should go up this week, with OU forced to feed Avant and Jonathan Hatton Jr. as its only healthy running backs.
Kentucky has also been porous against the run, giving up 151.2 rushing yards per game. The Sooners obviously aren’t good on the ground, but even if they just sniff that average, most of that total should be on Avant’s stat line.
Folks start putting ‘OU’ and ‘CFP’ in the same sentence
These Oklahoma Sooners, with a lifeless offense, are being considered College Football Playoff contenders? You bet. That would seem a lot crazier if Brent Venables didn’t pull it off just last year.
This spoils my final prediction, but upsetting No. 15 Kentucky would give the Sooners back-to-back wins over top-15 teams, including then-No. 1 Texas. That should skyrocket OU in national rankings on Sunday, and at 4-2, the Sooners would be skating on thin ice, but talking heads around college football would start discussing whether Venables could pull a team from the ashes and into the CFP as he did a year ago.
It sounds ludacris, but so did the Sooners upsetting No. 1 Texas this time last week.
Final score prediction: Oklahoma 24, Kentucky 13
Make that back-to-back top-15 upsets for the Sooners to get back on track in 2026.
Kentucky is probably already overrated after getting a massive boost from its upset over LSU, but that only benefits the Sooners. This is the worst defense OU has faced, other than UTEP, so the offense should be more productive than it has been in the past four games, especially if quarterback John Mateer is on his game and turnover-free.
The Wildcats also haven't had to take on a defense as good as OU's yet. Alabama, which has the No. 45 scoring defense while allowing 20.7 points per game, held Kentucky to 17 points, handing the Wildcats their only loss so far.
The Sooners will do even better than that, and the offense can do enough to get the win, even without a special teams or defensive score.
