For the first time in 2026, the Oklahoma Sooners are underdogs.
The Sooners hit the road to play the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs for their SEC opener on Saturday in Athens. The fact that anything can happen in college football has to be in the back of your mind, but reality says there’s no chance OU pulls off an upset.
The Bulldogs are 3-0 but haven’t been tested yet with three easy blowouts against Tennessee State, Western Kentucky and Arkansas. They have statistically the best scoring offense in all of FBS, averaging 59.3 points per game, and there’s no doubt the defense is also solid under Kirby Smart.
OU, meanwhile, has made everything look like a challenge, especially moving the football. The Sooners are averaging 12 points in their last two games after losing to Michigan 17-10 and barely getting past New Mexico 14-6. They have also gotten to the red zone just once in the past two weeks.
Brent Venables’ defense is still elite despite a problem missing tackles, so Georgia’s offense will get closer to Earth on Saturday, but the wonder is if it will be close enough to overcome OU’s offensive deficiencies. That’s a lot of ground to make up.
All the ingredients for a blowout are there, but these are still two blue bloods with talented rosters, and Vegas oddsmakers don’t see the Sooners getting embarrassed in Athens.

Predicting Oklahoma vs. Georgia
This whole week feels eerily similar to when the Sooners faced Michigan in Week 2, including even the way the coach seemingly above is talking about his opponent.
Georgia head coach Kirby Smart had the utmost respect for Brent Venables and his program during his weekly press conference. Despite the Sooners’ recent struggles, Smart still understands that OU is a blue blood with a roster that’s loaded with talent. He’s also well aware that defense travels, and Venables has one of the best units in the country as maybe the greatest defensive mind in college football.
Venables showed that same respect for Michigan just a few weeks ago. The Wolverines had just needed a miracle to survive Western Michigan and everyone but apparently Venables, outside of Ann Arbor, had checked them off. Unfortunately, Venables knew what he was talking about, and the Wolverines took down the Sooners.
Vegas was also on the same page as Venables, listing Michigan as just a 4.5-point underdog despite opposite Week 1 showings between the two teams. Bettors thought that was free money, but The Big House won.
Now, it’s the Sooners facing another blue blood after looking lifeless in a close win against a solid Group of 6 opponent. Vegas again doesn’t expect a blowout, no matter how bad OU’s offense looked last week against a much weaker defense.
Just like all the ingredients are there for a blowout, OU also still has the ingredients to be the College Football Playoff contender it was supposed to be. If two title contenders are on the field, then it’s really anyone’s game.
But the reality is, results speak louder than expectations. Maybe these Sooners can make some noise against Georgia to hush everyone else, but seeing is believing.
There’s more than likely a middle ground between blowout and upset.
