Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer continues to swear his surgically repaired thumb is fine, but everything else says otherwise.

Mateer had surgery on the thumb of his throwing hand on Sept. 24 after injuring it against Auburn the Saturday before. He returned just 17 days after surgery to play in the Red River Rivalry, and although Mateer has struggled ever since, he has repeated his thumb is fine.

Video shows John Mateer wince in pain from thumb

“It’s definitely not my thumb, I’ll tell you that," Mateer said this week. "I’ll stand by that. My thumb is perfectly fine. I think there’s just ups and downs of the flows of the game."

However, ESPN showed an incident on its broadcast from before the Sooners' game against Tennessee on Saturday night of Mateer high-fiving a fan, who briefly held onto Mateer's right hand. Afterward, Mateer was seen wincing in pain and shaking his hand. It also looked like he was telling a teammate about what happened while motioning with his hand.

It's clear Mateer hasn't been the same since the injury, whether the thumb is the reason or not. All of his numbers have dipped the last three games, and Mateer looked just as bad in the first half against Tennessee.

Considering the poor performances, the video grew concern from Sooner Nation that Mateer's thumb isn't actually fully healed like he has claimed and could be the reason behind his recent lack of production, especially on Saturday night.
