The fact the Oklahoma Sooners have such a long and storied tradition in football but only two Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees shows just how rare of an honor it really is.
The list could one day grow with the likes of Adrian Peterson and Trent Williams, but for now, it's still just Tommy McDonald and Lee Roy Selmon representing the Sooners in Canton.
Tommy McDonald and Lee Roy Selmon represent Sooners in HOF
Lee Roy Selmon, DT
Lee Roy Selmon was the first Sooner to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995. After an All-American career at OU, he was part of the first pro football team ever in Tampa Bay along with his brother, Dewey. Selmon eventually played nine seasons, all with the Buccaneers.
Selmon was a unanimous choice as NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1979 and the NFL Players Association named him the NFC Defensive Lineman of the Year four times. He was also a six-time Pro Bowler and First-Team All-Pro in 1979, 1980 and 1982.
Even after he was done playing, Selmon still made Bucs history as the first franchise player to ever participate in a Super Bowl when he was part of the coin toss ceremonies for Super Bowl XXIX as a member of the 1995 HOF class. In 2010, NFL ranked Selmon as the No. 98 greatest player of all time.
Selmon was also inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988.
Tommy McDonald, WR/RB
Tommy McDonald played during a time unparalleled to today's game as the last non-kicker to ever play without a face mask in the NFL. Also listed as a wide receiver and running back, McDonald was what old school football fans know as a flanker. He also accomplished all he did while listed at 5-foot-9 and 176 pounds but still missed only three games because of injury during his career.
McDonald spent 12 seasons in the NFL between the Eagles, Cowboys, Rams, Falcons and Browns in 1957-68. He was a six-time Pro Bowler and was an NFL champion with the Eagles in 1960. He was also a First-Team All-Pro in 1959 and 1960. He led the NFL in both receiving yards and touchdowns in 1961.
McDonald was eventually inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
