Even Pat McAfee was impressed by Oklahoma QB John Mateer's punt

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer proved Saturday against South Carolina that there is nothing he can't do on a football field.

Mateer, already known for his dual-threat ability as a quarterback, showed off a new skill later in the fourth quarter of the No. 14 Sooners' 26-7 win over South Carolina. In his final play of the game before coming out, Mateer booted a surprise 40-yard punt that was placed perfectly for freshman Elijah Thomas to down on South Carolina's goal line.

The play ultimately resulted in a safety one play later when OU defensive lineman Markus Strong tackled Matt Fuller in the end zone.

John Mateer surprises with punt vs South Carolina

Before he was seen yelling every time you turn on ESPN, Pat McAfee was once a standout punter with a great social media presence that eventually made him a lot more famous than his leg ever did. McAfee was a two-time Pro Bowler as the Indianapolis Colts' punter for eight seasons. He was also an All-American at West Virginia before getting selected in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

McAfee saw Mateer's punt and was impressed as someone who used to make a living doing that.

"GREAT punt from Mateer here," McAfee wrote in a post on X.

McAfee wasn't the only one impressed by Mateer's dime of a punt, though. OU fans couldn't believe Mateer has yet another skill up his sleeve after leading college football with 44 total touchdowns last season.

Mateer said after the game that it was the first time he punted since middle school. OU offensive coordinator also joked that it was Mateer's best highlight after throwing for just 150 yards and a touchdown and admitted that it's apparently been on the play sheet all season.
