Oklahoma on Tuesday announced the three players it will send to SEC Media Days on July 20 to represent the Sooners in Tampa, Florida, and there was an unexpected face included in the trio that hints at what head coach Brent Venables could be expecting in 2026.
Offensive lineman Eddy Pierre-Louis will join quarterback John Mateer and defensive end Taylor Wein on the trip to Tampa, where Pierre-Louis called home before heading to Norman. Mateer and Wein seemed to be locks to represent the Sooners as leaders on each side of the ball, but even though the third attendee was a wildcard, Pierre-Louis still would have been way down the list of guesses from fans for who would attend.

John Mateer and Taylor Wein to join Eddy Pierre-Louis at SEC Media Days
Pierre-Louis is one of four returning starting offensive linemen from last season for the Sooners, which also includes center Jake Maikkula, guard Ryan Fodje and tackle Michael Fasusi. Three of those four were freshmen last year, including Pierre-Louis, but unlike Fasusi and Fodje, he redshirted in 2024 before getting consistent playing time last season.
Last season as a redshirt freshman, Pierre-Louis saw action in all 13 games while making six starts at left guard, which included the Sooners' final five games of the season. He was expected to once again assume that role in 2026, and Venables sending Pierre-Louis to be a face of OU's program at SEC Media Days all but confirms he'll not only again be a starter, but much more as a breakout candidate.
Heck, of the four returning starters, Pierre-Louis seemed to be the least likely to be at SEC Media Days. Maikkula could be a preseason All-SEC caliber player, while Fasusi and Fodje were both big-time 2025 recruits who immediately impressed as true freshmen.

The most likely representatives, though, seemed to be linebacker Kip Lewis or wide receiver Isaiah Sategna III. Both are bona fide stars who chose to return to Oklahoma instead of head to the NFL after stellar seasons. There's also Tate Sandell, who could have represented the special teams unit as the reigning Lou Groza Award winner as the best kicker in college football.
Last year, Venables sent Mateer, defensive end R Mason Thomas, and safety Robert Spears-Jennings to SEC Media Days. Sending the QB1 is the obvious choice, but Thomas and Spears-Jennings are now in the NFL after being staples on what was one of the best defenses in college football in 2025. Their time at SEC Media Days foreshadowed what was ahead.
Not only did Venables signify Pierre-Louis will start again, but also that he expects big things from the redshirt sophomore in 2026. Yes, Tampa is Pierre-Louis' hometown and that makes the trip even sweeter, but the nod from Venables to represent the Sooners at SEC Media Days is more about who he expects to be the biggest pieces in Oklahoma's success for the upcoming season.
Venables' move to send Pierre-Louis to Tampa shows he's not shying away from the fact that he plans on the Sooners' offensive line to not only be much-improved compared to 2025, but for Pierre-Louis to be a leader of a group that could shock fans in 2026.
