If On3's Andy Staples is correct, then Selection Sunday for the College Football Playoff is going to be a heartbreaking day for Sooner Nation.

After a chaotic Week 8 that included nine Associated Press Top 25 teams losing, Staples released his updated 12-team field projection for the CFP and had the Oklahoma Sooners as one of his first four teams out.

Andy Staples projects Sooners to just miss College Football Playoff

According to Staples, OU, Notre Dame, Missouri and Texas will just miss the cut of getting into the CFP. The Sooners just lost to Texas 23-6 two weeks ago, but the Longhorns already have two losses to Ohio State and Florida, so after a poor showing against Kentucky last week, Staples still doesn't believe Texas will get in despite the Red River Rivalry win and easier schedule ahead.

Notre Dame is likely already cooked with two losses, but the Sooners host Missouri on Nov. 22, and the winner of that Week 13 matchup could have the best chance to slip into the CFP based on current trajectories.

Even though that meeting with Missouri could help decide things for the Sooners, they actually have the most opportunity of the four teams left out to solidify a spot in the 12-team field before December.

All of OU's remaining five opponents are ranked in the most recent AP Top 25, and three are at home. Two of those teams Staples also has in the 12-team field right now in No. 3 Alabama and No. 6 Ole Miss, which the Sooners welcome to Norman at 11 a.m. CT Saturday. The Sooners could essentially swap spots with Ole Miss with a win this weekend.

At 6-1, the Sooners could barely go .500 the rest of the way at 3-2, and even at 9-3, OU would have three ranked wins and two quality losses to boast a solid resume. Even with that argument, though, that scenario could still end in Selection Sunday disappointment for the Sooners.
