Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables apparently quietly gave assistant Kevin Wilson a promotion this offseason.
OU on Sunday officially announced the hirings of running backs coach Deland McCullough and cornerbacks coach LaMar Morgan, but in the midst of that press release, Wilson, who was a senior offensive analyst last season, was subtly mentioned as assistant head coach for offense, which honestly just sounds like a different way to label an offensive coordinator despite Ben Arbuckle entering his second year as the Sooners' OC.
New Oklahoma title revealed for Kevin Wilson
Wilson getting a change to his title was initially pointed out by Sooner on SI's John Hoover when most of OU's assistants got a raise in January. Hoover reported then, though, that Wilson would be assistant offensive line coach, while fellow offensive analyst John Kuceyeski had his title changed to assistant quarterbacks coach. Both also got a raise in the move, with Wilson's salary getting set at $500,000 for 2026.
At that point, OU had not made it clear what Wilson's actual title would be in 2026 until naming him during the recent announcement.
This is Wilson's second stint in Oklahoma. He spent nine seasons on the Sooners' staff under Bob Stoops in 2002-10 before leaving to be Indiana's head coach. He served as OU's offensive coordinator during that tenure, while also coaching the offensive line, tight ends and fullbacks.
After leaving OU, Wilson was Indiana's head coach for six seasons, Ohio State's offensive coordinator for six seasons and Tulsa's head coach for two seasons. With all that experience, Venables then added Wilson as an offensive analyst last offseason to primarily help mentor Arbuckle, who was only 29 years old when he took over as the Sooners' OC.
Although he's now listed as assistant head coach for offense, it's still unclear what Wilson's actual duties will be, or if they'll just stay the same but with a different title, in 2026.
