Oklahoma technically doesn't even have a coach at the position right now, but recruits have so much faith in Brent Venables' system that cornerbacks are still considering the Sooners among their best options.

Rivals' Hayes Fawcett reported via X on Wednesday that 2027 consensus four-star cornerback and top-150 overall prospect Taelyn Mayo has narrowed his college choices down to a loaded top 5 that includes OU, Texas, LSU, Ohio State and Texas A&M. The decision came on the same day that news broke the Sooners are expected to hire LaMar Morgan from Michigan to replace Jay Valai as their defensive backs coach.

2027 CB Taelyn Mayo includes Sooners in top 5 with other college football powers

Mayo previously released a top 10 in October that he cut in half after eliminating Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Florida State and Oregon. He also held reported offers from Auburn, Georgia Tech, Florida, Kansas State, Missouri, Ole Miss, USC and more after getting on recruiting radars extremely early, with his first offer coming from San Diego State in June 2023, which was the summer of Mayo's freshman year.

The only unofficial visit that Mayo has reportedly taken so far was to Florida State in June 2024. Multiple coaches have recently taken trips to Texas to visit Mayo, but he hasn't posted yet about any OU visitors. However, there's reason to believe Mayo could be leaning toward the Sooners, considering he's already wearing crimson and cream on his gloves.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Mayo is the No. 135 overall prospect in the 2027 class and No. 12 cornerback. He's also the No. 20 overall player in the state of Texas out of Lewisville High School, where the Sooners also got offensive lineman Michael Fasusi as the top player in their 2025 class.

The Sooners already have 13 commits to their 2027 class, which has it as the No. 1 class in the country early on, per the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings. Mayo would be the third corner to commit after four-star Mikhail McCreary and three-star Mikyal Davis. Mayo is ranked four spots above McCreary in position rankings.
