One of the many reasons that make the Oklahoma-Texas Red River Rivalry one of the featured games of the college football season every fall is that most of the games themselves are so emotionally charged and highly competitive in nature.
Blowouts are rare in this longtime college gridiron rivalry. Only 16 times in the 121-year history of the Red River Rivalry has one team won by 30 or more points. The number of one-score games is nearly triple that amount (50). Forty-one percent of all games played in the OU-Texas rivalry have been decided by eight points or less. By contrast, 13% of all games have been in the blowout range.
Interestingly, six of the 16 total 30-plus-point victories in the history of this series have occurred since 2000. Eleven more of the games played between these two teams in the past 26 seasons have been one-score contests.
The 49-0 win by Texas over the Sooners in Brent Venables' first season as the Oklahoma head coach in 2022 was the largest margin of victory over OU in the history of this series and is tied for the third-largest victory margin by either team. Oklahoma also had a 49-point win over Texas in the Sooners' 2000 national championship season.
Of the 16 games that have been decided by 30 or more points in the series, Oklahoma has won nine and Texas seven. The two largest margins of victory are both owned by the Sooners: 63-14 in 2003, a 52-point win, and 50-0 in 1908.
There is also something to be said for being the home team in this classic rivalry series, which the Sooners are in 2026. Since 2000, Oklahoma has won nine of 13 games as the designated home team, but it has lost the last two times it has been the home team under Venables.
