Blake Griffin's new late-night sports show continues his post-NBA ascension

Former Oklahoma men's basketball star Blake Griffin has had no problem making a career for himself post-NBA, and he just keeps finding even more perfect avenues for himself.

Griffin announced on Wednesday night that he's launching his own late-night sports talk show that will be titled, "The Stepback with Blake Griffin." According to Hollywood Reporter, the show will debut on Oct. 20, which is opening day of the NBA season, and new episodes will be released every Tuesday on Prime Video.

"Finally, a chance to recreate the last few seasons of my career: sitting down," Griffin joked on social media to share the news.

Obviously Griffin will talk basketball on the weekly show and also other sports, and he'll do so in front of a live studio audience, just like the classic late-night talk shows everyone is familiar with. He's not expected to have guests, though, only Griffin in the spotlight, dishing out whatever he wants to.

The show will not only be a must-watch for Sooner Nation and basketball fans, but Griffin's likeable personality and honesty should make it enjoyable for all sports fans. That's exactly why of all the former athletes, Griffin is one of the few to get his own unique show, other than a self-started podcast.

Blake Griffin keeps thriving in retirement as an entertainer

After an OU career that included being an All-American and National Player of the Year in 2009, Griffin moved on to the NBA as the No. 1 overall pick to the Los Angeles Clippers. That led to a 15-season NBA career for Griffin between the Clippers, Detroit Pistons, Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics. He was a six-time NBA All-Star and gained fame quickly when he won the 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest as a rookie. Right then, we should have known already that Griffin would be entertaining us long after his basketball days.

But as successful as he was as a basketball player, Griffin has done just as well for himself off the court thanks to his business mind, wit and being relatable. It's even hard for Texas fans to hate Griffin.

Griffin co-founded Mortal Media, a film and television production company, to really go all in with the entertainment industry. His company is behind his newest show. He's also dabbled in stand-up comedy, hosted Saturday Night Live, acted in multiple television shows and last season was an analyst for NBA on Prime Video's studio coverage. He's also more places than Roy Kent between his frequent appearances on popular podcasts, even ones that aren't exactly sports-related.

All that, and Griffin has only been retired from the NBA since 2024.

The latest venture of "The Stepback with Blake Griffin," though, could be Griffin at his best. Everything about him will be able to shine through since he's not just the face and name of the show, but also in the background making decisions with production. We'll get an unfiltered Griffin able to completely be himself in front of the camera.

Griffin is the perfect example of an athlete thriving after retirement, which is when most have no idea what to do with their life going forward. Somehow, even though he no longer has a basketball in his hand, the best is still yet to come for Blake Griffin.
