Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback and Oklahoma Sooners legend Baker Mayfield reportedly suffered an injury early on in NFL Training Camp.
According to ESPN's Jenna Laine, Mayfield suffered a hand contusion after hitting his throwing hand on a helmet at practice on Thursday. NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported that Mayfield underwent extra precautionary scans and tests, and a more severe injury was ruled out. For now, Mayfield is considered day to day and will miss practice at least on Friday.
Buccaneers QB injured during practice
The injury appears to be nothing and Mayfield should return to practice soon. The Bucs have their first preseason game against the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, Aug. 9, but as an eight-year veteran and solidified starter, Mayfield likely wasn't going to play anyway, so there shouldn't be any worry if he does sit out.
Mayfield certainly avoided disaster, though, considering it's the throwing hand of a starting quarterback. We've seen those types of injuries hinder NFL quarterbacks throughout a season.
Fortunately for Mayfield, even if he does miss some time because of injury, he's now a lock as the Bucs' QB1 and his contract is guaranteed for the next two years after the Bucs reworked their franchise QB's contract earlier this week.
Mayfield led the Bucs to another NFC South division title last season while earning his second straight Pro Bowl appearance. He threw for career-highs in passing yards (4,500) and passing touchdowns (41) during the regular season.
The Bucs have legitimate Super Bowl aspirations for this season with almost everyone returning, but they definitely need Mayfield healthy to accomplish that.
