As expected, Oklahoma men's basketball plummets from rankings

There will no longer be a number next to Oklahoma's name.

As expected, the Sooners dropped out of the rankings in both major polls that were released Monday. In the Associated Press Top 25, OU crashed from No. 17 to unranked, and went from No. 16 to unranked in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Sooners, though, are still receiving votes in both polls. They received 63 votes in the AP Top 25 as the second team on the outside looking in behind St John's, which got 83 votes. OU tallied 14 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

OU being left out of both set of rankings were no surprise after the Sooners have lost three straight games to Alabama, Texas A&M and Georgia, respectively. Only losses to top-10 teams Alabama and Texas A&M might have kept OU just inside the top 25, but the third loss Saturday to an unranked Georgia was enough to push the Sooners out.

This fall would have been less predictable two weeks ago, though, when the Sooners debuted inside the top 10 of the USA Today Coaches Poll at No. 10 while climbing as high as No. 12 in the AP Top 25. After a loss to Alabama in its SEC opener last weekend, OU then dropped to No. 17 in the AP Top 25 and No. 16 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Sooners then suffered two blows last week to No. 10 Texas A&M on Wednesday at home then to Georgia on Saturday in Athens.

Georgia accomplished two ranked upsets last week -- first against No. 6 Kentucky -- to catapult the Bulldogs to No.23 in both rankings.

With the addition of Georgia and loss of OU, the SEC still has nine teams ranked in the AP Top 25, including No. 1 Auburn, No. 4 Alabama, No. 5 Florida, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 8 Kentucky, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 15 Mississippi State, No. 21 Ole Miss and No. 23 Georgia. OU and Missouri are receiving votes.

The Sooners get somewhat of a breather the next two weeks with three unranked opponents in a row -- Texas, South Carolina and at Arkansas. All three teams currently have at least five losses.

Wins over Texas and South Carolina might not be enough to boost the Sooners back into the top 25 next week, but three wins in a row after a road victory over Arkansas should have OU back in the top 25 of both polls the next week, especially considering the chaos of college basketball.

The Sooners' NCAA Tournament resume also can't really afford to lose any of those three games with such a daunting schedule ahead.
