For some reason, people are still trusting Alex Grinch to lead their defenses.

UCF on Tuesday announced that it hired Grinch as its new defensive coordinator under new (old) head coach Scott Frost. And basically any fan base of a program where Grinch has been wondered why.

Grinch was Oklahoma's defensive coordinator and safeties coach under Lincoln Riley in 2019-21. In 2021, Grinch's final season in Norman, the Sooners gave up 390.85 yards a game, which was historically one of OU's worst defenses statistically.

The 2020 season was the best statistically under Grinch. The Sooners surrendered 350.64 yards a game that season. For comparison, this season, OU allowed 318.25 yards a game during the regular season.

Riley mercifully took Grinch with him to USC, where Grinch still couldn't stop Pac-12 offenses. After an abysmal stretch last year, Riley finally parted ways with Grinch before the season ended. At one point, USC gave up nearly 42 points on average during a seven-game stretch.

After Riley dumped him, Grinch became co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Wisconsin this season. In the Big Ten, where the forward pass was just recently discovered, the Badgers gave up 23.08 points a game, which was tied for 50th in FBS.

Frost was hired as UCF's head coach for the second time on Dec. 7. Despite no prior professional connection, Frost trusted Grinch to lead his defense and hired him as UCF's defensive coordinator.

Grinch has also been the defensive coordinator at Washington State and Ohio State. He was co-defensive coordinator at Ohio State for one season before Riley hired him at OU.
