Duke Miles erupted for a season-high 29 points as the Oklahoma men extended its season-opening win streak to a dozen games with an 89-66 nonconference win over Central Arkansas on Sunday.
A crowd of 6,224 was on hand at Lloyd Noble Center on the last weekend before Christmas as the Sooners improved to 12-0, tying the third-best start in program history and their best start since the 2015-16 season, when the Buddy Hield-led OU team opened the season winning 17 straight games on the way to an appearance in the 2016 NCAA Final Four..
The Sooners never trailed in this game. OU led by as many as eight or more points for much of the first half and gradually stretched a seven-point halftime advantage, 46-39, to as many as 28 points in the second half.
Miles, a High Point transfer, scored 20 of his 29 points in the first half, cashing in seven of nine field-goal attempts, including three of five from behind the 3-point line. While Miles wielded the hot hand in the opening 20 minutes, the dynamic duo of senior Jalon Moore and true freshman Jeremiah Moore took over in the second half. Moore scored 15 of his 19 points after intermission, and Moore contributed 11 of his 17-point total.
Central Arkansas (3-9), a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, closed within six points, 54-47, in the first four minutes of the second half, but the Sooners reeled off a 13-1 run in response and the game was never close after that.
Oklahoma has one more nonconference game before beginning SEC conference play on Jan. 4 at No. 6 Alabama. The Sooners will host Prairie View A&M on Sunday.
1. Duke Miles doubles his best scoring performance of season
Miles followed up a 17-point effort in OU's midweek win over Michigan with a career- and season-high 29 points on Sunday against Central Arkansas. He was 11 of 17 from the field, 4 of 8 from 3-point range and a perfect 3 of 3 at the free-throw line. He also contributed three rebounds and three assists.
It was Miles' seventh double-digit scoring performance in OU's 12 games this season. His previous high game in a Sooner uniform was 19 points against East Texas A&M.
2. Sooners' up-tempo transition game buries Central Arkansas
Oklahoma scored 33 points on fast breaks to just three for Central Arkansas. If the Sooners weren't scoring off of fast breaks, they were taking high-percentage shots in the paint and cashing in to the tune of 40 points.
3. Jeremiah Fears reaches double digits in scoring for 12th straight game
The Sooners' true freshman sensation has scored in double figures in all 12 of Oklahoma games.
Coming off of a season-high 30-point performance in the win over Michigan, Fears finished with 19 against Central Arkansas. Fears has scored 20 or more points in four games this season and is averaging a team-best 18 points a game.
The last time a true freshman led the Sooners in scoring was Trae Young, who not only led OU but all of college basketball in 2017-18, with 27.4 points per game.
