The identity of any college sports team is rooted in its home state. The teams, for one reason or another, tend to embody the characteristics of the fans who support them. The fans don’t play, but they have an immense impact.

When you think of USC, you think of flashiness. Reggie Bush dazzling under the Coliseum lights. Miami brings to mind unbridled confidence and swagger, backed up with hard-hitting football and spectacular offensive talents like Michael Irving. Those identities are what you would expect those two cities to produce in their football programs. For some, those identities are attractive, but not for most who grew up in Oklahoma.

When people think of the Oklahoma football, they think of tough, blue-collar, grit and passion. The Boz blitzing down the middle and smashing a quarterback. Adrian Peterson running through tackles and diving into the end zone at the Cotton Bowl. Baker Mayfield lowering his shoulder to deliver a blow to a linebacker.

That is Oklahoma. That mentality is instilled at a young age, and it bleeds into the team from the fans, but just as importantly, it takes form in the homegrown players. Those kids who grew up playing a game of pickup as they watched their local high school play under those Friday night lights, dreaming of the day they could put the pads on. And then on Saturdays, battered and bruised, sitting in front of the television to watch the Sooners.

The Sooners have had some great players from Oklahoma that inspired generations, and a few from the 2026 roster are primed for breakout seasons to join that long list.

Running back Xavier Robinson was born in Yukon, Oklahoma, and attended Carl Albert High School before he committed to Oklahoma. In 2024 as a freshman, he had cameo appearances where fans saw flashes of the talent he could become. His statement game that year was in Week 13, when he ran the ball 18 times for 107 yards and two touchdowns for an upset victory against No. 7 Alabama.

In 2025, Robinson struggled to see the field early in the season, but ended up nearly doubling his carries and yards compared to the year prior. There is little doubt that the Sooners once again will have a starting running back from Oklahoma next season. Robinson, combined with Tory Blaylock and the revamped offense, should make for a lethal backfield.

Wide receiver Elijah Thomas came out of Checotah, Oklahoma, as a four-star wide receiver and the No. 1 recruit out of the state of Oklahoma in 2025. His senior year of high school, Thomas had 1,803 yards and 26 touchdowns on 72 receptions. Thomas chose OU over other SEC rivals, including Alabama and Texas A&M.

Thomas recorded only one reception for the Sooners in his freshman year, but the hype surrounding this young receiver is still there. The Sooners have 10 outgoing receivers due to the portal or losing their eligibility. OU fans could see a more involved role for Thomas this upcoming season with explosive play capability.

Linebacker Taylor Heim played for Bethany High School and was ranked as a top-10 recruit out of the state of Oklahoma by ESPN in 2023. Heim redshirted his freshman year and will be entering this season as a redshirt junior. He appeared in every game last season on special teams and as a deep rotation linebacker.

The Sooners lost three linebackers, which will demand Heim to step up and enter a more involved role with the Sooner defense. Incoming Michigan transfer Cole Sullivan was the only portal addition at linebacker for the Sooners, but Brent Venables tends to lean on the guys already in the locker room. Keep an eye out for Heim to establish himself on this year's Oklahoma team.
