2028 two-sport athlete Colton Fitzgibbon has the speed to benefit both Skip Johnson and Brent Venables

There’s immediate intrigue every time the Oklahoma Sooners land a new commitment, but maybe never as much as for two-sport 2028 athlete Colton Fitzgibbon. 

On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported that Fitzgibbon committed to the Sooners on Wednesday to play both football and baseball at the college level. He’ll play wide receiver for Brent Venables’ program and be an outfielder on Skip Johnson’s roster.

It’s ultimately speed that makes Fitzgibbon capable of playing both sports at an extremely high level. According to Fawcett, Fitzgibbon clocked in at 6.26 seconds in the 60-yard dash, making him the fastest prospect in the 2028 baseball class. 

The 60-yard dash is what baseball uses to measure speed, unlike football that relies on the 40-yard dash, but no matter how it’s clocked, speed is speed, and speed is valuable no matter the sport. 

As a football prospect, Fitzgibbon, listed at 6 feet, is a three-star recruit and the No. 64 wide receiver in the class, per the 247Sports Composite. Last season as a sophomore for San Ramon Valley High School in California, he caught 44 passes for 805 yards and 10 touchdowns.

His other football offers included Oregon, Cal, Oregon State, and New Mexico. OU was his most recent offer just last month. He's the fourth addition to the Sooners' growing 2028 class and first future target for four-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri.

Fitzgibbon is regarded even higher as a baseball player. Baseball America ranks him as the No. 31 overall prospect in the class. He was also selected to the USA Baseball 2026 16U/17U National Team Development Program. 

The downside to Fitzgibbon’s potential in baseball is that he’s on the verge of possibly becoming a great enough MLB prospect that he could get drafted high enough in 2028 to never actually set foot on OU’s campus. He could also always choose to focus on just one sport by the time he suits up. 

Fitzgibbon’s top priority would likely be baseball, considering his greater potential. The Sooners are also coming off a national title this past season.

Fitzgibbon is obviously a unique prospect, but two-sport athletes really aren’t that rare for the Sooners. Most recently, Alec Blair pledged to play on the OU baseball and men’s basketball teams before transferring. 

Most recently, there was Taylor Tatum, who was a standout running back as a freshman in 2024 and was also on the baseball roster. He ultimately transferred to Michigan, where he decided to put all of his focus on baseball. 

The most famous two-sport star is Kyler Murray, who won the Heisman Trophy as the Sooners’ quarterback and was the top overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was also selected ninth overall in that year’s MLB Draft as an outfielder. 

Fitzgibbon doesn’t play quarterback like Murray, but they’re worthy of comparison as two-sport athletes because both have elite speed that makes them great in both sports. 

Two-sport stars have either been absolute stars or never really did anything at all for OU, so what will actually ever come from Fitzgibbon is a mystery, but definitely riveting.
