Oklahoma football quarterback Dillon Gabriel has been named a finalist for the 2023 Manning Award, which recognized the top quarterback in college football.

The Sooner redshirt-senior, in his second season at Oklahoma after transferring from UCF, is one of 10 finalists for the Manning Award, which was established 20 years ago to honor the football contributions of Archie, Peyton and Eli, all quarterbacks who starred in college and went on to successful careers in the National Football League.

Gabriel is also a top-10 finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and was a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award, which every season honors the most outstanding player on college football, and the Davey O’Brien Award, another national quarterback award.

A unanimous All-Big 12 First-Team selection, Gabriel led the Big 12 and ranked in the top-10 national in multiple offensive categories: points responsible for per game (21.0), total offense (336.1 yards per game), passing yards (3,360), passing offense (305.0 per game), passing efficiency rating (172.0. passing touchdowns (30), yards per pass attempt (9.5) and completion percentage (69.3).

In his two seasons at OU, Gabriel has completed 66.8 percent of his passes for 6,828 yards and 55 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 688 yards and 18 touchdowns. He ranks seventh in FBS history in career passing yards and is fourth with 152 career touchdowns. He is only the second player in FBS history to throw for 14,000 yards and run for an additional 1,000. OU’s Baker Mayfield is the other.

Two former Oklahoma quarterbacks are winners of the Manning Award, and they did it in successive seasons: Mayfield in 2017 and Kyler Murray in 2018.
