Oklahoma football quarterback has been named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after a spectacular performance in the Sooners’ 59-20 win over West Virginia on Saturday.

In addition, on Monday Gabriel was named one of 17 semifinalists for the prestigious Maxwell Award, presented every season to the most outstanding player on college football.

The fifth-year quarterback and second-year Sooner accounted for all eight Oklahoma touchdowns (five passing and three rushing) and led an OU offense that produced a season-high 644 yards of offense on Saturday.

Gabriel was responsible for 473 yards of offense against West Virginia, completing 23 of 36 passes for a season high 423 yards and ran the ball 11 times for an additional 50 yards. His three rushing touchdowns tied a career high and his five passing touchdowns were the most nationally last week.

The OU starting QB leads the Big 12 this season with 340.6 yards of total offense per game, 306.9 passing yards per game, total touchdowns (36), passing touchdowns (25), completion percentage (70.5), and passing efficiency rating (172.1).

Gabriel is in 11th place in NCAA career touchdowns with 120. He needs one more TD pass to move into a three-way tie for ninth place with BYU’s Ty Detmer and Aaron Murray of Georgia. With three more, he will tie former Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones for eighth place.

Joining Gabriel as Big 12 honorees this week are defensive back Demari Henderson of UCF (Defensive Player of the Week), Texas Tech kicker Gino Garcia (Special Teams) and running back Abu Sama III (Newcomer).

This is Gabriel’s sixth Big 12 weekly honor in the two seasons he’s been at Oklahoma, and second Offensive Player of the Week award this season.

Three other Sooners have received weekly awards this season: LB Danny Stutsman (Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11; WR Nic Anderson (Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 18 and Oct. 23) and Gavin Freeman (Co-Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 4).
