As bad as the weekend went for the Oklahoma football team, something good did come out of it.

Former 2024 Michigan State commitment Reggie Powers II flipped to the Sooners over the weekend.

Powers announced his commitment on Saturday during Oklahoma’s football game at Kansas.

The four-star safety prospect from Centerville, Ohio, had originally committed to the Spartans but received an offer from Oklahoma in September after he had decommitted from Michigan State, presumably after former Spartan head coach Mel Tucker was fired amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Powers was in Norman to see Oklahoma defeat UCF. OU reportedly had to fend off a late push by UCLA for his pledge, but the relationship he had developed with Sooner head coach Brent Venables and defensive backs coach Brandon Hall won the day in his final decision. The former Michigan State commit also had offers from Cincinnati and Ohio State.

Powers is the No. 11 safety in the 2024 class nationally and the 154th player overall, according to 247Sports.

The 6-foot, 1-inch, 200-pound safety become the 28th commitment in Oklahoma’s 2024 class and joins fellow defensive-back commits Mykel Patterson-McDonald, Eli Bowen (brother of current OU freshman Peyton Bowen), Devon Jordan, Jeremiah Newcombe and Jaydan Hardy.

The scouting report on Powers is that he has the speed and athleticism to play deep middle safety and the size and physicality to play in the box. He had 80 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 10 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and two sacks in his junior season at Centerville High School.
