Oklahoma football wide receiver Nic Anderson caught a couple of touchdown passes in OU’s win over UCF this past weekend, and on Monday he was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.

The redshirt-freshman had five catches to lead Sooner receivers with 105 yards and two more TD catches to lead his team and the Big 12 with eight for the season. Anderson has 16 total catches through seven games and eight have gone for touchdown. That’s easily the highest rate nationally.

Anderson’s touchdown catches on Saturday were 29 and 42 yards. All eight of his touchdown catches have come in a little over a month. His first was Sept. 16 in the Sooners’ 66-17 win over Tulsa, and he hauled in three in that game.

A native of Katy, Texas, and the younger brother of former Oklahoma running back Rodney Anderson (2015-18), Nic ranks No. 2 nationally, averaging 24.2 yards per catch.

This is the second Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award this season. He won that honor on Sept. 18 after three catches for 120 yards and all three for touchdowns in the win at Tulsa.

Anderson’s Big 12 weekly honor is the sixth by an Oklahoma player this season. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel was named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 18 and Oct. 9; Gavin Freeman was Co-Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept 4 and Danny Stutsman was Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11.

Anderson joins Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon (offensive player), BYU’s Eddie Heckard (defensive player) and Isaiah Hankins (special teams) as Big 12 weekly honorees this week.
