Oklahoma football: Sooners lose WR Andrel Anthony for remainder of season
By Chip Rouse
Following the euphoria of the marquee Oklahoma football win over Texas on Saturday, the Sooners got some bad news on Monday, learning that wide receiver Andrel Anthony will miss the remainder of the season.
Head coach Brent Venables disclosed on Monday that the Sooners’ leading receiver will undergo surgery for a non-contact injury. He did not reveal specifics of the injury. Anthony left the game on Saturday in the third quarter with what appeared to be a lower body injury and did not return. It is believed to be a knee injury.
Anthony, a transfer from Michigan, has 29 catches for 429 yards and a touchdown through six games. He leads all Sooner receivers in yards and is second in receptions.
“It’s tough,” said Venables said Monday night. “You hate it for him. We have other guys. You hate it for Andrel and how hard he has worked. We got to 6-0. He had a big part in helping us get there.”
Anthony had five catches for 42 yards in the win over Texas this past weekend. LV Bunkley-Shelton and Jayden Gibson will likely battle for the wide-receiver spot replacing Anthony for the remainder of the season.
Starting offensive guard McKade Mettauer also suffered a injury in the Texas game. He was carted off the field. The injury was later reported to be a sprained ankle. “We’re looking at best-case scenario for him,” Venables said on Monday. “He’ll be back sooner rather than later.
Mettauer is in his second season as an offensive-line starter for Oklahoma after transferring from Cal.
Oklahoma has a bye week this week. The No. 5 Sooners return to action on Oct. 21 at home against UCF.
